In addition to medical and personal care services,
LSS offers three United Way programs: The Good Neighbor
Program, Outreach Social Services and the Volunteer Money
Management Program. These programs are available to older
adults age 60 and older, and disabled adults age 50 and
older. Services are offered in St. Louis City and County,
St. Charles and Jefferson County.
The Good Neighbor Program started over 25 years ago under
the premise that people without special training could
provide companionship and assistance with the tasks of
daily living, enabling elderly and disabled adults to
continue living at home.
This program provides free referral to
independent caregivers. Services provided are non-medical,
require a four-hour minimum and may include:
- Preparation of Meals
- Light Cleaning
- Laundry
- Shopping
- Assistance with Personal Hygiene
- Assistance with Walking and Transfers
- Companionship
“Handyman” referrals are also provided through
the Good Neighbor Program as a community service. These
services may include:
- Home Repair
- Yard Work
- Gutter Cleaning
- Electrical
- Plumbing
- Carpentry
To reach a Good Neighbor Program Coordinator for more
information, rates or a “Handyman” referral,
please call 314-446-2471 or 314-446-2517.

When considering factors that force older adults to sacrifice
living independently, the inability to perform tasks such
as signing a check, sorting the mail or reading a bank
statement doesn’t often come to mind. However, sometimes
it’s the simplest tasks that present the greatest
challenges to the elderly and the disabled.
VMMP seeks to help those individuals by providing a volunteer
to assist with:
- Bill Organization
- Check Writing
- Statement Balancing
- Financial Paperwork
VMMP is a service designed particularly for individuals
or couples who have no other help available on a regular
basis. Clients must have a checking account in order to
participate.
“Without warning, I lost my eyesight due to macular
degeneration,” said one VMMP client. “When
I confided to my nurse that I was having difficulty paying
my bills because I couldn’t see, she referred me
to the program. VMMP turned out to be exactly what I needed!”
VMMP clients are charged fees based on a sliding scale,
determined by monthly income. It is an interfaith partnership
of LSS and Jewish Family and Children’s Services.
For more information about VMMP, please
call 314-446-2474 or 314-812-9327.
